A New Definition for ‘Pet Scans’

Just read a very interesting article about dogs being used to help diagnose a variety of cancers. A dog’s sense of smell has been estimated to be 10,000 to 100,000 times more powerful than humans. This is due to the 300 million receptors in their noses (only 6 million in humans), which helps dogs detect odors in parts per trillion.

According to the Huffington Post, the “shiny wet nose attached to a hairy four-legged, tail-wagging, generally friendly creature,” proves more successful in detecting some types of cancers than sophisticated machines. Read the article here.
